PoCv11 Update

PoCv11 has made its impact in the Helium community, but as long as you use a low gain antenna, report your location and antenna gain accordingly – PoCv11 will have little to no effect on you. You can read more about how PoCv11 could affect you on our blog post, “What is Helium’s PoCv11? How does it affect me?

As far as PoCv11 being released, the Helium development team is shooting for this week according to an announcement on Discord:

All, We’ve made the decision to defer the PoCv11 release to Monday or Tuesday next week. We’re working through some potential performance related issues we’d like to look into before we do the reactivation. We’ll have a more specific timeline on Monday morning PT.

Couple of reasons for this:

1. We’re about to do another mandatory miner/Hotspot firmware release. This one will include some really important libp2p fixes that should hopefully (in conjunction with some seed changes) help address a lot of the not_found errors folks are seeing and peerbook stale issues. This is a constant game of whack-a-mole but we really do want to get the network to be healthier here. Doing this alongside PoCv11 changes may create some confounding impact on the network and make it difficult for us to monitor any potential issues.
2. It’s late in the week and a chain variable release tomorrow (with 1 of the core team members offline) seems like a bad idea before a weekend.

Thanks again for the patience and expect an update shortly on the new miner/Hotspot firmware release. Blog and discord announcements coming.

Once PoCv11 is officially implemented onto the blockchain, we’ll be sending out notifications to those that have registered for our notification service that’s offered on our explorer: https://beta.hotspotrf.com/explorer/. You can read more about our explorer and the ability to set up notifications for Helium hotspots on our blog post titled “Helium Hotspot Explorer October Release“.

Performance News

It hasn’t been any secret that our services have seen a degradation in performance. As not only do we continue to expand, but Helium continues to expand it’s the growing pains that are taking a toll on our infrastructure. We’ve announced on Twitter our remedy of this:

1/2 As we move forward in accommodating not only the growth of Helium, but our platform in the following 24 – 48 hours we’ll be doing extensive work to our infrastructure. Please be mindful of periodic downtime on some to all services throughout this time-frame.

2/2 The end-result being a cut down of simulation times, faster load times and an all around performance increase of the platform. Thank you for not only your patience, but understanding.

Once we’ve completed this work on our infrastructure, we’ll be sure to make an official announcement on Twitter and our blog of our completion. Until that point, just be mindful that we’re actively working to not only restore performance but also to increase it.
